Articulation speech therapy

Speech and Articulation Delays and Disorders

Speech, articulation and voice problems can significantly impact a child’s ability to communicate effectively in social and academic settings. Children with these disorders may struggle with articulation, phonology, clarity, and speech rate, making it challenging for others to understand them. If not addressed, they can also impede the child’s later academic success in the areas of reading and writing.

Children develop the sounds of speech naturally and over time, starting with easier sounds like, /m/, /b/, /p/ and then progressing to later developing sounds. Milestones are used as benchmarks to measure how children progress. If a child is not producing most sounds by the age of 5, they may have a speech sound disorder. Ideally, however, a child would receive intervention and support from a speech-language pathologist before that age to help facilitate speech sound development before they form poor habits, which can take longer to remediate.

Our Approach

The personalized therapy sessions target specific areas of difficulty, including:

  • Muscle control and coordination:
The client practices oral placement exercises combined with specific speech practice to improve their speech production abilities.
  • Articulation and phonological patterns:
The client practices correct speech sound production through a variety of methods, using groups of words based on phonological patterns, if warranted.

  • Self-awareness and self-monitoring:
The client is taught strategies to gain awareness of their speech production, so that they can feel empowered to self-monitor and create their own change.

  • Generalization/carryover:
Your child will learn how to apply skills learned in therapy to real-life situations, and you can help them practice across many contexts for well-rounded speech development.

Comprehensive Support for Speech and Literacy

Research has shown that speech sound disorders are often linked to challenges in learning to read and other academic issues. Our experienced therapist, Maya, addresses not only the speech sounds themselves, but also the surrounding skills necessary for comprehensive speech and literacy development. Furthermore, Maya ensures therapy sessions evoke a sense of accomplishment rather than stress, which is a vital element in achieving successful outcomes.
